Abstract

This paper discusses a method for finding near-optimal build orientations for shape deposition manufacturing (SDM). SDM is a solid freeform fabrication process that allows the creation of complex shaped parts by the iterative application of numerically controlled material deposition and milling operations. The part build time in SDM process depends on the number of layers. And the number of layers depends on the build orientation. Therefore, finding build orientation is a crucial step in the process planning of SDM parts.
