Abstract

Abstract: Textile artifacts associated with Christian worship and spirituality have been documented extensively. However, the spirituality of sewists themselves has received relatively little attention. In addition to the products created for sacred and secular use, there have long been sewists for whom sewing has been an inherently spiritual activity. This essay explores the ways in which sewing can be an embodied expression of Christian spirituality. It can be a means of service to the larger community as well as a means of spiritual expression for sewists themselves.
