Abstract

Different approaches have been used to define fuzzy functional dependencies (FFDs) but unlike normal functional dependencies (FDs) one unique approach has not dominated. FDS can be used to describe intentional properties of a database and as such can be used for database design to eliminate redundancy in data. FFDs, however, seem more appropriate for modeling extensional properties of the database. Another interesting data property are gradual functional dependencies (GFDs) which reflect a kind of data monotony. In this paper we will define FFDs and GFDs in the light of linguistic summaries and show how they can be evaluated in a new query language called SummarySQL.
