Abstract
AbstractInstitutional repositories collect the output of scholarly activities at universities and similar organizations. While a great deal of research has treated curation, collection development, and interoperability in institutional repositories, the literature regarding information retrieval in these repositories is small. This poster reports initial work on an ongoing project to improve access to institutional repository data through advanced information retrieval techniques. In particular, this poster treats the problem of “expert finding” in institutional repositories. We propose that a useful mode of information discovery lies in supporting queries seeking people (as opposed to documents) who evince expertise on a given topic. This poster describes a framework for conducting searches of expert authors in institutional repositories. Additionally we report results from several empirical tests designed to judge the effect of various modeling decisions in the expert finding problem for expert finding in institutional repositories.
