Abstract

AbstractThis chapter highlights the importance of competitive grants in agricultural research, describes the attributes of successful competitive grants, discusses their potential advantages and disadvantages, outlines the key elements for establishing competitive grants, suggests criteria to measure their performance, and provides an example from Chile. The chapter concludes that competitive funding complements institutional funding and has the potential to improve research performance, but that the appropriate balance between competitive funding mechanisms and institutional block grants can only be determined in relation to a clear statement of the objectives to be pursued.
