Abstract
This chapter outlines the history and current status of personal finance education in U.S. schools. It covers the national personal finance curriculum standards in place and how they are used to guide schools, administrators, and teachers in the delivery of financial education content. Education mandates at the state level vary and details are provided outlining the states with and without mandates. As teacher training and preparedness can be an issue, various organizations and resources are identified that help teachers prepare to deliver content specific to personal finance. Additionally, the chapter outlines the impact of personal finance education, challenges in reporting accurate data, and obstacles to effective implementation of personal finance education. Finally, the role of policy in financial education is covered in the context of federal and state action.
