Abstract

Summary Economic forces are neither created in a vacuum nor confined to one. The current financial crisis in East Asia bears both revealing similarities and marked points of contrast with the Mexican debt crises of 1980 and 1994, as well as with other prior financial struggles in Eastern Europe. The essay seeks not only to uncover common antecedents but seeks to elucidate novel precedents as well. Lessons drawn from the current Asian crisis may one day serve to arm us with effective means to counter or contain future outbreaks of similar financial contagion.
