Abstract

The L3M45M45 Auger spectrum and the 2p3/2 core level spectrum of pure Ni are found to be considerably wider than those of pure Cu. When Ni is diluted into Zn, the main peaks in the L3M45M45 Auger spectrum and the 2p3/2 core level spectrum become as sharp as those of pure Cu. High resolution UV photoemission experiments show that the Ni d-like density of states narrows and retreats from the Fermi level upon dilution of Ni in Zn. These results suggest that final state interactions, which broaden the core level spectra, are also broadening the Auger spectra. It is also found that the L3M23M45 Auger spectrum of Ni does not narrow when Ni is diluted into Zn, indicating that it does not represent the density of d-like states.
