Abstract
The evidence for the etiologic significance of certain morphologic elements (elementary and initial bodies) observed constantly in the cytoplasm of the epithelial cells of the conjunctiva in inclusion blennorrhea of the new-born has recently been strengthened by the experiments of Thygeson,<sup>1</sup>who reported his investigation in eleven cases of the disease. His statement that these inclusions are the causal agents of inclusion conjunctivitis is based on (1) their constant presence, (2) their absence in bacterial conjunctivitis, (3) the absence of pathogenic bacteria in inclusion blennorrhea, (4) the transmissibility of inclusion conjunctivitis and the presence of inclusions in the new host and (5) the production of the disease with bacteria-free suspensions of epithelial scrapings containing inclusions. Two patients with inclusion blennorrhea were available to us for detailed study and inoculation of animals, and the positive results obtained seem to justify their being reported here.
