Abstract

This 1982 film demonstrates the mechanical properties of the three types of intrafusal muscle fibre observed directly in isolated muscle spindles during stimulation of individual dynamic or static fusimotor axons in ventral root filaments of anaesthetised cats. It shows, by means of recordings on a storage oscilloscope, how activity in each type of intrafusal fibre modifies the discharge in group Ia and group II afferent axons from the primary and secondary sensory endings. The innervation of the spindle, and the action of each type of intrafusal fibre, are illustrated in animated diagrams.
