Abstract
The development and distribution of hoaxes are often linked to the existence of online media. Speed in delivering information is considered a challenge in today's digital era, so sometimes it overlooks the importance of information accuracy and verification. The hoax issue does not only arise and is related to political problems, but also touches various other aspects of people's lives. Film Tilik (2018) is a short film that is viral on social media because it raises the hoax issue and reaps the pros and cons of netizens who watch it. This study aims to see how the film depicts the process of spreading hoaxes in society. This research is a qualitative research using Roland Barthes' semiotic analysis which analyzes a sign's meaning through denotation, connotation and myth. The results of this study explain how the hoax distribution process occurs in society. In addition, the researchers found a variety of motives behind the character of the figures who made hate speech who initiated the emergence of a hoax. Researchers also see that the film Tilik is a short film work that provides a complex social criticism of the topic of a hoax issue that often occurs in Indonesian society
