Abstract

In this work, hexagonal barium ferrite films were deposited on polished sapphire (0001) substrates by pulsed laser deposition. The dependencies of morphology, crystallinity and magnetic properties on film thickness were investigated in detail. The results from measurements revealed that the degree of orientation and surface roughness of films gradually deteriorated with increasing film thickness. Additionally, as the film thickness increased, the magnetic properties showed an obvious degradation, especially in terms of the saturation magnetization and magnetic anisotropy. Consequently, the results of this study further prove that the deposition of high-quality BaM films with large thickness is significant, while difficult.
