Film Reception and Dominant Desire: A Study on the Reception of Roaring Currents with Psychoanalytic Text-Mining

Abstract

데이터마이닝을 활용한 영화수용 연구는 지금까지 영화에 대한 관객의 긍정/부정 평가와 평점에만 초점을 두었고, 왜 관객이 영화를 보고 싶어 하는지, 즉, 관객의 욕망에 대해서는 무관심했다. 본 연구는 영화가 관객의 지배적 욕망을 만족시키는 것이 수용에 중요한 요소임을 밝히고자 한다. 이를 위해 유례없는 대흥행을 기록한 <명량>이 개봉되기 전 2주 동안의 트위터 텍스트를 수집하여 트위터 사용자의 지배적 욕망을 정신분석적 텍스트마이닝을 통해 분석하고, 영화 개봉 후 적힌 네이버 <명량> 리뷰의 텍스트를 정신분석적 텍스트마이닝으로 분석하여, 트위터 사용자의 지배욕망이 리뷰어의 지배욕망(해소)과 어떻게 연관되는지를 연구하였다. 트위터 분석을 통해 우리가 발견한 것은 세월호 참사의 여파로 트윗 작성자 대다수가 현실 앞에서 강하게 욕망하는 것은 국민을 위해 진정으로 헌신하는 리더를 보고 싶어 한다는 것이었다. <명량>개봉 전에 트윗 작성자들이 가졌던 사회적 지배욕망은 국민들이 믿고 기댈만한 진정한 리더에 대한 욕망이었다. 영화리뷰 분석을 통해 우리는 <명량>의 관객들이 거대한 적 앞에서도 백성을 위해 자기 목숨을 내던지는 진정한 리더 이순신의 모습에 감동하며 배설, 통쾌, 시원함을 느낀다는 것을 알 수 있었다. 개봉 전에 관객들은 진정한 리더를 보고 싶어 하는 지배욕망을 가졌으며, 이들은 이순신 영화 <명량>을 보며 배설적/카타르시스적 욕망의 만족을 경험했다는 것을 알 수 있다. <명량>이 기록적인 흥행기록을 만들 수 있었던 것은 개봉 당시 대다수가 가졌던 사회적 지배욕망을 만족시킬 수 있었기 때문이라고 판단된다.What makes a film popular? This is a very fundamental question, whose answer not only directors, producers, entertainment business CEOs, and cultural policy makers but also almost everyone involved in the field of cultural industries is hungry to know. Many elements influence the reception of a film by the audience, and the question has been answered diversely. The paper focuses on the audience and their desire, that is, what they consciously or unconsciously wish to see and experience in watching films. Since film is a cultural virtual space in which audience can feel satisfied in seeing or experiencing what they often feel lack of in reality, a very popular film should satisfy the desire of most of its audience: that is, the dominant desire of society at a given time. The paper examines how Roaring Currents, the most popular in Korean film history, is related to the dominant social desire of South Korea at the time of release. To find the dominant desire of society, Twitter twit texts written for 2 weeks before the release and Naver movie reviews written after the release were collected, analysed, and interpreted, based on Freudian-Lacanian psychoanalytic text-mining methodology. The result is that the dominant desire of the twit writers(potential movie viewers) were to see a true leader in the aftermath of the Sewol tragedy and such a desire could be vicariously satisfied by the movie which represents Yi Sun Shin as the true leader sacrificing himself for the people. Roaring Currents was viewed by the unprecedentedly record-breaking number of people because it could satisfy the dominant desire of most Korean people in the aftermath of the Sewol tragedy.
