Abstract

Sue Ryder Care established a health informatics team in 2006 to carry out needs assessments to establish current and future requirements for specialist palliative and neurological services throughout the UK. This team undertook a comprehensive literature search of publications in neurological, palliative and end-of-life care, followed by research involving a triangulation of methods. Three main forms of secondary data were collated in each geographical area; demographic statistics, strategic documents and structured information from key stakeholders. A detailed report has been produced about each strategic health authority in England, each health board in Scotland, in addition to a summary report for Wales and Northern Ireland. This work has demonstrated that commissioners are unable, or unwilling, to plan neurological services using standardized data. This will impact on the ability of providers to guarantee equity of access to services, and will therefore compromise compliance with the quality requirements set out in the National Service Framework for Long-Term Conditions.
