In this issue of Pediatric Neurology, Eom and colleagues analyze the neuropsychological evaluation and quality-of-life (QOL) measures in a cohort of 70 individuals with mitochondrial disease from a single center. 2 Eom S. The mean intelligence quotient of these patients indicated mild delays and the frequent occurrence of behavioral abnormalities. Mothers of children showed significant levels of stress and depression. Thus cognitive abnormalities and impaired quality of life occurred in children with mitochondrial disease, whereas stress and depression occurred in their mothers. Are these mothers with stress affected with mitochondrial diseases themselves or do they have normal DNA but are stressed as caretakers of a chronically ill child? This is an important question in those patients with mitochondrial disease with potentially vertical inheritance. Preliminary Study of Neurodevelopmental Outcomes and Parenting Stress in Pediatric Mitochondrial DiseasePediatric NeurologyVol. 71PreviewLittle is known regarding the neuropsychological profiles of pediatric patients with mitochondrial diseases or their parents, information that is crucial for improving the quality of life (QOL) for both patients and parents. We aimed to delineate neurodevelopment and psychological comorbidity in children with mitochondrial diseases in the preliminary investigation of adequate intervention methods, better prognoses, and improved QOL for both patients and parents.
