Abstract

A newly developed, electro-optical Pockels effect technique, which allows the dynamic measurement of surface charge distribution, is employed to investigate surface discharge phenomena. Positive surface discharges exhibit a filamentary structure in the resultant surface charge distribution. The effects of electronic and ionic negative surface charges and the effect of electric field directions on positive surface discharge development are investigated.
