Abstract

The genus Rhopaloteuthis has been established by M. Lissajous (1915) for belemnites with a dorsal groove and no compressed guard. Some authors put yet it in the familly Belemnopseidae, which has a ventral groove. A guard of the type species R. sauvanausus (d' Orbigny), already figured by P. de Loriol (1900) is here reexamined. The phragmocone shows that the single alveolar groove is opposite to the siphuncle, it is therefore dorsal. Then, the genus Rhopaloteuthis indisputably belong to the familly Duvaliidae Pavlow.
