Abstract
In this article, I develop a theoretical framework to explain rivalry for narrative control between transgressing organizations and media outlets. I do so by integrating and advancing key insights from competitive dynamics and crisis management research. The first part of this framework conceptualizes the unique tensions, actions, and reactions that characterize rivalry for narrative control following organizational transgressions and distinguishes it from other forms of rivalry. The second part of the framework conceptualizes the role of both journalists’ and organizational leaders’ perceptions in shaping actions and reactions during rivalry for narrative control. This framework expands competitive dynamics research to account for a unique form of rivalry between dissimilar actors and, in doing so, broadens research on crisis management following transgressions to account for such rivalry.
