Abstract
Fieldbus systems may not be handled like other communication systems, because the area of applications is considerably larger and the diversity of different requirements may not allow to use the same technology for all applications. In this paper the various aspects of fieldbus technology are discussed from their functional significance. This should help you to understand the behaviour of different fieldbus systems and to look behind the curtain of a big theatre. This paper will not help you to find the best fieldbus at all, but it may be a guideline for you to find the best fieldbus for your actual application.
