Abstract
Abstract The global field is a term first used by Roland Robertson, with JoAnn Chirico, in 1985 to indicate the form, or the pattern, of the world as a whole and elaborated more fully in his Globalization: Social Theory and Global Culture (1992). The global field has been regarded as an alternative to concepts such as world system, world society, global society, global system, and others. The rationale for this is that the concept of field is more fluid than such alternatives. The idea of a “field” was inspired particularly by the work of Georg Simmel.
