Abstract
Interpretation of the sequence of earth events, and field work, are unique to geology. The tendency to neglect field work for more glamorous and remunerative laboratory research is frittering away part of geologists' scientific birthright. It is recommended that the profession strive to upgrade the image of field work in the eyes of the public in general and of college administrators in particular.
