Field Theory in 2 + Dimensions and Critical Dimension in the String Model. I

Abstract

The anomalous c-number term of the Virasoro algebra in the string model is analyzed in terms of the field theory in the two-dimensional Minkowski space-time, which, called the internal space-time, is obtained by transforming the basic variables, t" and rJ describing the motion of relativistic strings. It is shown that the anomaly disappears if one allows the dimensionality of the internal space-time to be continuous and goes to the limit of two dimensions.
