Abstract

n -Butyl acetate, one of the principal components of apple aroma, was attractive to Rhagoletis pomonella (Walsh) in orchard tests. Twenty other apple volatiles, which included 10 esters, 8 alcohols, and 2 aldehydes, were unattractive. A 9-cm red spot painted on both surfaces of a Pherocon® AM trap increased fly catch by 4.5 times over that obtained with a plain Pherocon® AM trap. Ammonium acetate, a food lure, nullified the attractiveness of the red spot, suggesting that flies must receive stimuli in the proper sequence or combinations to be responsive.
