Abstract

Field trials were conducted to determine the effective control period of various insecticides used as mosquito larvicides. Dursban®, ( O,O -diethyl O -(3,5,6-trichloro-2-pyridyl) phosphorothioate), Abate® ( O,O -dimethyl phosphorothioate O,O -diester with 4,4'-thiodiphenol), malathion, fenthion, propoxur, methoxychlor, and DDT were evaluated using a bioassay technique. The bioassay used in temporary rain pools is described. Insecticides were tested in early spring, following winter applications at heavy rates. The effective control period in summer was evaluated at standard and heavy rates of application. Heavy rates increased the effective control period of most chemicals tested.
