Abstract
Rivers are natural geological laboratories that can be readily used for introductory physical geology classes. River processes and landforms make excellent subjects for local field trips. Field exercises can involve discharge measurement, flood prediction, and application of the Hjulstrom diagram to river sediments. These field exercises require an estimation of the velocity of the river current. Surface velocities can be measured using a “current bob” constructed from a stryofoam ball, several nails, a wooden dowel and several meters of seine twine. The Manning Formula provides a check of the current velocity.
