Abstract
The distribution of field practice assignments and ultimate job placements of the 810 geomorphology graduates is analyzed over the 40-year period. There is generally a poor correlation between agencies offering field practice and final employment. Only about a fourth of the graduates have been assigned to jobs in agencies in which they also did their summer field work, with more than half of these finding employment in the Geography Faculty itself. A number of government agencies that are being heavily used by the university for summer field practice have been generally well staffed with geomorphologists since the mid-1960s and offer few job openings. On the other hand, many Moscow University geomorphology graduates are being placed in government operating agencies that offer few field practice opportunities consistent with the university curriculum.
