Abstract
Adults of Chironomus atrella (Townes), emerging in large numbers from a tidal cove, have been a nuisance to residents along the shore. This is the first report of this insect as a pest. Open-ended drums emplaced in the bottom of the cove were used to test insecticides against the larvae under field conditions. Abate® ( O, O -dimethyl phosphorothioate O, O -diester with 4,4'-thiodiphenol), malathion, naled, and pyrethrum were all effective when formulated to carry the insecticide to the bottom mud.
