Abstract

It is noted that the structure of coincidence related ordered boundaries and that of associated defects such as grain boundary dislocations and boundary steps are fairly well understood. However, other possible types of ordered or partially ordered structures in grain boundaries exist. Field-ion microscopic observations of such ordered structures in W are reported. Examples are included to show that although a large proportion of grain boundaries are coincidence related, partially or nearly ordered boundaries also exist. The results presented add to the evidence that both periodicity and near periodicity may play a part in determining grain boundary structures. (JRD)
