Abstract

Field ion micrographs of hafnium with a satisfactory quality have been obtained. Imaging conditions are described. Single and double leaved spirals around the {101̄0}, {101̄1} and {202̄} planes were observed. The orbital model and the computed patterns of the hcp lattice are applied to explain the alternate dim and bright net plane layers of the {101̄0} planes. The regional brightness distribution of hafnium is compared with Co, Re, and Ru and is discussed from the orbital model's point of view.
