Abstract

The fine structures in as-quenched and tempered martensite in an Fe-0.8% C-0.4% Mn steel was investigated with hydrogen-ion microscopy. Field-ion image characteristics and contrast features of these materials were examined. In the images of as-quenched martensite both twinned and untwinned regions were observed and crystallographic as well as morphological data on the transformation twins were obtained. Variation in microstructural features occurring during tempering were studied and a comparison was made between microstructure and hardness. The contribution of various hardening mechanisms was discussed for the peak-hardness in the first stage of tempering.
