Abstract

A simple practical procedure has been developed by drainage engineers in the humid northern regions of Iran to estimate the parallel spacing required for lateral ditches. During a two-year field investigation, this approach was tested and compared with the Hooghoudt formula. The spacing found was comparable to the spacing from the Hooghoudt equation, using as input the 5-year return period of maximum daily rainfall. The new method assumes that the open channel drains by gravity to an outlet. Hydraulic conductivity measurement or determination of the drainage coefficient are not essential.
