Abstract

High-aspect-ratio conical protrusions with nano-scale sharpness were fabricated by single-pulse laser irradiation of gold thin films. The structures were characterized by electron microscopy and their field-emission properties were examined through current vs. voltage measurements. The results of these measurements were used to estimate the geometrical enhancement factor, as well as the active emitting area of the microstructured surfaces. These parameters were also evaluated by numerical modeling and the results show reasonable agreement with the experimental data.
