Abstract

Analytical expressions have been obtained to represent the field due to various types of steady current distributions in a torus. Of interest are some symmetric current distributions: uniform density surface and volume current distributions; and currents with density varying inversely as the distance from the axis (e.g., the distribution obtained when a radial cut is made in the torus and a constant emf is applied across it). Also, suitable expansions have been obtained for fields due to a helically wound current-carrying coil in a torus. Finally, certain inherent analytic difficulties in determining true magnetic surfaces in this case are pointed out.
