Abstract

Sand painting is a very new and popular performance art technique, and it has important meaning for the artistic creation. Computer-aided sand painting is now in the ascendant, whose fully automated mechanism is still an attractive challenge. Image data field, inspired from short-range nuclear force in physics, is introduced into sand painting stylization. With preserving edges and features, a fully automatic image filter pipeline based on image field coupling is proposed, which consists of three main steps, including image data field generating, multiscale field coupling, and additional details optimizing. The visual comparisons indicate that the proposed pipeline and image filter are feasible and effective, and sand painting-like artistic images can be produced by using multiscale field coupling. The qualities of various rendering images are also investigated from the perspective of feature similarity measures. The quantitative and qualitative results suggest that the field coupling-based filter is appropriate for sand painting stylization, and the time cost is satisfied for practice applications. Generally, the proposed method provides a reference for automatic creation of computer-aided sand painting art.

Highlights

  • Nonphotorealistic rendering (NPR for short) is an area of computer graphics and image processing that focuses on enabling a wide variety of expressive styles for digital art, which is inspired by artistic styles such as painting, drawing, technical illustration, and animated cartoons

  • We present an image-based artistic rendering (IBAR) method for generating artistic image with a sand painting style, and our intentions or research questions are the following four aspects: (1) How different types of fields and field coupling have an influence on the various features of an input image? We generated various image data field using different image features, and field coupling is implemented in order to create a sand painting filter

  • To show that our rendering results (see Figure 8(e)) are better than those by others, we compare our results with the ones generated by bilateral filter [19] (BF)-based method (BF for short), Kuwahara Filter [17] (KF)-based method (KF for short), and Resynthesizer in GIMP (GIMP for short), as shown in Figures 8(b)–8(d) from left to right, respectively

Summary

Introduction

Nonphotorealistic rendering (NPR for short) is an area of computer graphics and image processing that focuses on enabling a wide variety of expressive styles for digital art, which is inspired by artistic styles such as painting, drawing, technical illustration, and animated cartoons. As a new form of art, sand animation or sand painting, can tell stories by creating animated images with sand, which was pioneered by Caroline Leaf and more recently by Ferenc Cako. The essential step of sand painting is to create a series of sand images from raw materials (generally photograph or videos) and ensure the originality of performing arts. Sand painting has increasingly attracted audiences and artists because of its innovative and expressive graphic style. It is quiet difficult to acquire sand control skills using the basic production equipment, and people who are nonnative to this technique are generally unable to use sand painting
