Abstract

The dynamic properties of some coastal granular soils of the Eastern Province of Saudi Arabia are evaluated using the crosshole seismic method and resonant column tests. Emphasis is devoted particularly on the shear modulus and damping ratio. The low amplitude shear modulus is calculated from in situ measurements of shear wave velocity. Several resonant column tests have been conducted in the laboratory to study the variation of shear modulus and damping ratio with time, void ratio, confining pressure, and strain amplitude. The data obtained may be utilized in the design of foundations and structures exposed to dynamic loads.
