Abstract
Political fictions are interpreted as a special category of social fictions, and the author lists some garden-variety examples. Political fictions are functional both for the system and for the direct participants, but they may also be dysfunctional to the extent that they encourage disbelief and scorn for the leaders who must employ them. The topic has received a relatively small amount of attention in recent political research.
