Abstract
The premise of Fictional Family Tree project was in the invisible stories and intergenerational knowledge that we carry and transfer to future generations. We inherit our strengths and burdens from our relations and past events. By exploring and sharing these intergenerational experiences, we get a chance to understand ourselves and others. Aim of the project was to share experiences and create a participatory film that tells a story of generational continuation. Project was organised as experimental storytelling and participatory filmmaking workshop that combined reality and fiction, explored the past and the future. The idea combines together a concept of “transmission of the burden,” explored with creation of family trees and ethnofiction, a blend of documentary and fictional film that has been used in the field of visual anthropology. Project was carried out for students of social services at University of Applied Science of Metropolia and Diak in spring 2019. During the workshop students created a fictional short film.
