Abstract

The latex of Ficus carica (fig) contains a high level of protease activity due to the enzyme ficin. Callus initiated from stem segments of Ficus carica has also been shown to contain small quantities of ficin using immunochemical techniques. The ficin content of callus has been shown to vary with the hormonal composition of the medium using ELISA. However the bulk of the protease activity found in callus has different characteristics to ficin.
