Abstract

Fifty-one cases of fibrous mastopathy were studied clinically and histologically. The pathogenesis of fibrous mastopathy may be divided into three types which most likely represents a continuous spectrum of change from abundant acinar tissue and slightly increased stromal elements to abundant stromal elements and scant acinar tissue. There appears to be a correlation between the age of the patient and the type of fibrous mastopathy. The etiology of the fibrous mastopathy is obscure. Our clinical and histologic study suggests that it may be related to a changing hormonal balance.
