Abstract

Fibrous dysplasia (FD) (synonyms: fibrous osteodysplasia, fibrous bone dysplasia, Lichtenstein-Braitsev disease) is a benign non-neoplastic tumor-like congenital lesion, manifested as a localized defect in osteoblastic differentiation and maturation with the replacement of normal bone with fibrous stroma and islands of immature bone. The term “fibrous dysplasia” was introduced by Liechtenstein (1938), who first described disorders characterized by progressive replacement of normal bone elements by fibrous tissue. In 70%, there is a local one-sided lesion; spreading to the facial skeleton is observed in 25%. Malignant (sarcomatous) transformation into osteosarcoma occurs in 0.5%.
