Abstract

Fibromyalgia (FM) is a disorder characterized by widespread, chronic musculoskeletal pain and pressure hyperalgesia, which is often accompanied by additional symptoms such as sleep disorders, fatigue, morning stiffness, cognitive dysfunctions, and by an increased incidence of depression. A multitude of the symptoms resembles the so-called “sickness behavior“ that is considered an adaptive response to infection. In addition, altered hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis and sympathetic nervous system (SNS) activity has been reported in FM patients in response to psychosocial and physical stressors.
