Abstract

A 31 year old man with fibromuscular dysplasia of the renal artery presented with rash, hypertension of sudden onset, seizures and an elevated erythrocyte sedimentation rate. Renal arteriography revealed an aneurysm of the left renal artery which was interpreted as secondary to polyarteritis nodosa. Renal vein renin determinations suggested a unilateral, renindependent, surgically amenable cause of the hypertension. Nephrectomy resulted in prompt and sustained return of blood pressure to within normal limits. Three distinct patterns of fibromuscular dysplasia were present in the renal artery.
