Abstract
ORWIN has reported1 the occurrence of what he describes as ‘branching follicles’ in skin from two-year-old New Zealand Romney ewes: in his communication there appears to be some confusion concerning the evidence required to demonstrate conclusively whether follicles are branched, that is, have outgrowths of derived follicles, or are separate follicles which have coalesced. Orwin's photographs show more than one fibre in a common sheath at sebaceous-gland level and at a higher level; this, however, in itself is not adequate evidence that one follicle has been derived from another by branching. These follicles may equally well have been separately initiated and coalesced so that the fibres come to lie in a common sheath and a common follicular mouth.
