Abstract
During the 1980s approximately 23,000,000 Americans will be connected to new cable TV services for the first time. In addition, many of the older cable systems will be rebuilt to offer additional channels and services. Over the past thirty years coaxial cable has dominated as the transmission medium in community antenna television (CATV). However, during the past six years fiber optics has begun to penetrate this industry. A major question that is frequently asked is: To what extent will fiber optics technology contribute to the projected growth of the CATV industry? Rather than attempting to provide a direct answer to this question, this talk will first offer an overview of the CATV industry and then examine the underlying technological trade-offs associated with present fiber-optic CATV systems. Current research topics will also be reviewed to help gain additional insight into future trends.
