Abstract

Fiber-optic sensors and supporting field-portable instrumentation have been developed that are capable of in situ, continuous measurements of volatile organic compounds in groundwater and soil samples. The sensors are based on the polymer absorption of organic vapor and result in fluorescence enhancement of an immobilized fluorophor. Laboratory tests have characterized the effects of various volatile organic compounds and temperature on sensor performance. Preliminary in situ field data are presented from a jet fuel contamination site. The lowest detection limit is 10 ppm with a response time of 2.5 min with 7.5 % signal change.
