Abstract

We report on the feasibility of using an optical fiber network to perform an edge-detection operation on a given image. If implemented in a hybrid optoelectronic format, the high time–bandwidth product of optical fiber and the supporting optoelectronics can be exploited to form a powerful processing subsystem for use in image-processing tasks. The application detailed here is only intended as a proof-of-principle demonstration; similar networks can be designed for the processing of high-bandwidth signals.
