Abstract

We demonstrate an interferometric fiber-optic dc and low-frequency electric-field sensor based on the electrostrictive effect. The quadratic relationship between the applied electric field E and the induced strain e in electrostrictive ceramics (e.g., Ba:PZT) allows for the detection of low-frequency signals as sidebands of a high-frequency carrier. A preliminary investigation of the sensor has yielded a minimum detectable E field of 0.35 (V/m)/ Hz at 5 Hz for a sensor with 3 cm of fiber.
