Abstract

In this work, we report a fiber Bragg grating (FBG) sensing system for a real-time temperature monitoring during a high-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) treatment of breast fibroadenoma. Temperature monitoring of the HIFU procedure within the treated area contributes to a successful outcome of a thermal ablation procedure by providing a valid feedback to the clinician. The unique characteristics of the FBG sensors make them a valid alternative to traditional sensing techniques for a variety of biomedical applications, including thermotherapies. The experiments were conducted on ex vivo breast fibroadenoma tissues. Results confirm that proposed setup is able to perform multipoint temperature measurements and to distinguish between consecutive ultrasound pulses.
