Abstract

This paper, after a brief review of the ways in which metaphor has been defined in philosophy, linguistics and poetics, lists a synthesis of its main characteristics through the lenses of different psychological approaches. It also proposes a definition of the metaphor using the Psychology of Personal Constructs and suggests its use in clinical practice as a useful tool for both understanding the other and promoting change in psychotherapy. The metaphorical logic of “as if”- understood as a narrative transposition of the rhetorical figure through the telling of plausible stories – is also analyzed
