Abstract

Abstract The life history stages of Analipus japonicus (Harv.) Wynne (Phaeophyta) were examined using Feulgen microspectrophotometry in order to measure the relative DNA content of nuclei. It is concluded that the unispores and plants bearing plurilocular organs are haploid and the plants bearing unilocular sporangia are diploid. The site of meiosis is within the unilocular sporangia prior to formation of the unispores. A. japonicus thus exhibits caryologically distinct isomorphic phases.
